June 8-12

Dear Heath Families,

We are looking forward to our upcoming Sports Day on Friday, June 12thThe theme for this year’s Sports Day is Around The World. All students have been divided into teams with each team being assigned a colour. New this year, we have moved the Preschool race to the morning and plan to begin at 9:00am.

The Bike Parade will be back again this year. Students can load their bikes, scooters or any other wheels in the gym starting at 8:45 am. To get into the spirit of the day, students are encouraged to decorate their ‘wheels’ and wear clothing and accessories to match their assigned team colour. Please remember that e-scooters and e-bikes are not permitted on school property.

**Helmets are mandatory for the Bike Parade. Students not wearing a helmet will not be permitted to take part in the parade.**

All students will participate in Sports Day stations on both the upper and lower fields. Parents are invited to enjoy the day with us and come out to cheer on their children. Heath PAC will have a concession set up similar to last year on the basketball courts.

Parents will be able to pick up their child(ren) early on Friday at 2:30pm.

Electric Scooters and E-Bikes
As the warmer weather approaches, students will have more opportunities to engage in bike- and scooter-related activities like commuting to school. Please find below a reminder of the provincial regulations regarding electric kick scooters and electric bikes (e-bikes).
Electric kick scooters should not be used by students travelling to school or while on the school grounds.
Despite their popularity in our province, electric kick scooters remain illegal for use on public roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks across most of B.C., except in a handful of communities that are taking part in a pilot program to test the use of them. The City of Delta is not part of the pilot program. Even in the pilot program cities, it is illegal for a person under 16 years of age to operate an electric kick scooter and may result in a fine. Click here for more information.
E-Bikes: In B.C., it is illegal for students under 14 years of age to ride e-bikes. Students can operate light e-bikes at age 14 and standard e-bikes at 16. Parents or guardians of students below the minimum age must not knowingly permit them to ride an e-bike. For more information, including the definitions of a light e-bike and a standard e-bike, please click here.

May 19-May 22

Dear Heath Families,

We had an exciting past week with the Math Festival on Tuesday and District Track Meet on Thursday.

Many of our Division 1 students showed strong leadership by helping organize and run the afternoon festival at our school. We were also pleased to welcome Val Windsor, Delta School Board Trustee, who visited after school and thoroughly enjoyed the event. A big, “Thank You” to Mrs. Brugge for organizing this event.

We had 16 intermediate Thunderbird students that represented Heath very well at the District Track Meet: Arjun (Div.1), Uche (Div. 1), Nathan (Div. 2) Samuel (Div 2), Jasleen (Div.2), Riya (Div. 3), Ethan (Div.3), Cameron (Div. 3), Daniel (Div. 4), Mansehaj (Div. 4), Nirvair (Div. 4), Ajit (Div. 4), Kavnoor (Div. 5), Prabhleen (Div. 5) Imran (Div. 5) and Nihal (Div.5).

PAC News

If you have ever considered joining PAC – NOW IS THE TIME!!!!

Heath PAC AGM Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 10 and many executive positions are up for nomination!  Unless we can recruit a few more members, the Heath PAC will fold and become inactive for the upcoming school year.

Without the PAC, there will not be;

– Almost $5,000 in funding for our school from the government

– Hot Lunch

– Treat Days

– Funds for each classroom

– Funds for field trips

– Funds for cultural presentations

– Funding for the library and music room

– Funds for updating technology items in classrooms

– Funding for gym and sports equipment

– Funding for special requests from Teachers

– Sports Day Concession

One of the biggest concerns is that without a PAC, we will miss out on significant funding from the government.

Nominate yourself or someone else to have the opportunity for the rewarding experience of making valuable memories for your kids and others!  PAC is a great way to make new friends while doing something for your child’s school.  By being a member of the PAC executive you gain transferable skills that can put on your resume.

If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else for a position, please email your interest to PAC Chair Trish Medyniski at:  heath.elementary.pac@gmail.com

All nominees must be present at the Wednesday, June 10 AGM Meeting in order to accept the nomination and/or position. Here are the ‘job descriptions’ for each executive position.

May 4-May 8

Dear Heath Families,

This is the time of year when staffing allocations are made to schools and planning for the next school year begins.  Due to this, it is extremely important that our enrolment numbers be as accurate as possible and, therefore, I would ask families who will be leaving Heath to contact the school as soon as possible with this information.  Similarly, if you know of a family moving into our area, please encourage them to register their children as soon as possible to secure their placement at Heath Elementary.

As we plan for the 2026-27 school year, I would like to make you aware of factors that are important in organizing classes for next year.

Staffing and Class Size

The number of staff members assigned to Heath is decided by the Delta School District and is based on projected student enrolment.  Enrolment estimates and class size guidelines affect the configuration of classes.  Currently, the class size limit is 20 for Kindergarten, 22 for Grades 1-3, and 29 for Grades 4-7.  Combined (split) classes are an organizational necessity based on student numbers.  While combined classes are an organizational necessity, research indicates that multi-age groupings provide very positive learning environments for children.  Studies show that children in multi-age classes learn to become more independent, responsible learners and develop a greater degree of social responsibility.  Achievement levels of these students are as good as, or better than, the achievement levels of students placed in single grade classrooms.

 Criteria for Student Placement

Assigning students to particular classes is a very complex task that takes into consideration a variety of factors, including learning styles and strengths, what a student is able to achieve in relation to the goals of the curriculum, degree of independence in work habits, social and personal needs, age and physical maturity, previous placements, number of ELL and students with diverse learning needs, and parental insight.   Our objective is to create balanced classes based on intellectual and social / emotional / behavioural development, as well as peer support and other needs. The professional staff, including teachers, support staff and administrators are in contact with the children in the school setting for 30 hours a week.  Therefore, the classroom placement of students must be determined through school-based professional evaluations.  Teachers have school-based knowledge of the above and therefore can best determine where individual children should be placed.

 Parent Input

As our partners, we recognize that parents have important information that can assist with the placement of students.  Parents are welcome to advise the school of personal, educational, or social information that could affect a child’s placement.  Our staff will keep in mind this information, along with the above considerations, when building classes.

This information should not include a request for placement with a particular teacher. Any requests received that request a specific teacher will not be considered.

Maternity leaves, retirements, and lay-offs combine to make school staffing a changing and ongoing process.  Also, staff members may change grade levels due to school needs or further professional growth.  Whatever the scenario, we strive to place your child in a warm, caring environment that will maximize their learning.  If you have information about your child that you feel will assist us in making the best possible placement for them, please see the email from the school that was sent out today as it contains the Parent Input form that needs to be completed and returned to the school by May 29 at the latest.Input received after this date will not be considered.

Representing Our School in the Community

As students go about their days outside of school hours—whether attending community events, participating in extracurricular activities, or simply spending time with friends—we remind families that our students are ambassadors of their school wherever they go. The choices they make, how they treat others, and the pride they show in themselves all reflect the values we work hard to teach at school. We appreciate your continued support in encouraging respectful, responsible behavior and positive decision‑making in the community. Together, we can help our students take pride in representing themselves, their families, and their school well.

Staff Appreciation Week

Monday, May 4th to Friday, May 8th is one week of the year where we get to openly give thanks and appreciate all the staff at Heath who truly care and make a huge impact on our students. We have an “Appreciation Station” set up at the front office for students and parents to fill out cards for any member of our staff that you would like to express gratitude towards.

The Lunch Lady School Meal Program

We are excited to share that starting May 4, 2026, the Delta School District is piloting a new School Meal Program here at Heath Elementary in partnership with The Lunch Lady.

This program is designed to ensure every student has access to nutritious, balanced meals during the school day, so that they are better able to learn, focus and thrive at school. Families can choose from regular, vegetarian and halal-friendly meals for their child. The program is supported in part by the B.C. Government’s Feeding Futures program. Subsidies will be available for families who need financial support. The district plans to roll out the program at additional elementary schools during the 2026/27 school year.

More detailed information, including how to sign up for the program, view the menu and order meals for your child will be shared with you early next week.

2026/27 Budget Recommendations

Phase 1 of this year’s budget public consultation process resulted in 167 online survey responses from parents/caregivers, students, staff, and community members on their budget priorities for the upcoming school year. Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. You can see a summary of the feedback, along with general information on where the school district’s funding comes from and how it is spent here.

Following consideration of this feedback and the Ministry’s funding announcement, the Delta Board of Education released the draft budget recommendations for 2026/27 on Thursday, April 16. The Delta Board of Education is now inviting you to provide feedback on these via a short online survey or by sending an email to budget@deltaschools.ca before noon on Monday, April 20. This will enable your feedback to be shared with the board prior to the Special Public Board Meeting for Budget Input on April 21.

Alternatively, if you would like to share your thoughts in person, you are welcome to attend the meeting on Tuesday, April 21 at the School Board Office, 4585 Harvest Drive, Ladner. The meeting will follow the Regular Board Meeting and is expected to begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. To sign up to speak at the Special Public Board Meeting, please email kaquino@deltaschools.ca by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 20.

April 20-24

Dear Heath Families,

We had a wonderful day celebrating Vaisakhi on Tuesday. Thank you to all the families that provided staff with delicious food. We felt very special and well cared for!

We look forward to seeing everyone at our Student-Led Conferences next week on Wednesday and Thursday.

Family Literacy Night

Come join us for our first Family Literacy Night on April 22 and 23 from 2:00-4:00pm during our Student-Led Conferences. We will be hosting a range of activities with different guests in both the Multipurpose Room and Library.

Student-Led Conferences

Parents/caregivers are welcome to our Student-Led Conferences on Wednesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 23. There will be early dismissal at 2:00pm for both days. Sign up for the conference through Parent Connect is open.

This is an opportunity for your child(ren) to show you what they have been learning and share their goals for the last term. We encourage everyone to set aside some time to celebrate the learning your child will be sharing with you.

Casual Noon Hour Supervisor

Are you an active problem solver and a compassionate, caring individual?  If you, or someone you know, are looking for part-time employment as a casual noon hour supervisor at Heath Elementary, please drop off your resume at the office. Requirements include a genuine fondness for interacting with children, prior work experience, completion of a Criminal Record Check, and a commitment to actively participate in the school community.

2026 Enrollment

One of the main tasks that we focus on at this time of year is to begin planning for the next school year, both in terms of school enrolment and staffing. To help plan properly, we would ask that families inform the school as early as possible if your child will not be returning to Heath in September 2026. It is important that our enrolment numbers be as accurate as possible at each grade level so that staffing can meet the needs of our school population, and we can have the smoothest possible school opening in September. If you will be leaving our community, notifications of your plans in writing would be appreciated. Also, if you have neighbours moving into the area, encourage them to register as soon as possible to ensure attendance at Heath for September.

April 13-17

Dear Heath Families,

We had a great end to the short week. BC Lions, Jackson Findlay and Beau Lokombo, stopped in for a visit to help us learn how to save energy for our beautiful place we call home. We encourage you to talk to your child(ren) about all the ways everyone can make a difference.

Passover

For those that celebrated, we hope you had a Passover full of joy, good health, and family!

Sikh Heritage Month

Sikh Heritage month is an annual event to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Sikh Canadians to the BC’s cultural, economic, and social fabric. Various events and activities will happen across the province to showcase Sikh culture, history and achievements. The month-long celebration is an opportunity for Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike to learn more about the Sikh faith, while promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding. It also serves as a reminder of the values of equality, social justice, and religious tolerance that are central to Sikhi, and which are shared by all Canadians.

Vaisakhi will be held on Tuesday, April 14. Students and staff are encouraged to dress for the celebration.

The Surrey Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade is the largest in the world. It will return to the streets of Surrey on Saturday, April 18th, 2025. Approximately 500,000+ people are expected to attend. One of the most notable aspects of the Vaisakhi Parade is the tradition of celebrating the harvest through the giving away of food to attendees. Participants and onlookers are treated to a wide range of free food items prepared by hundreds of local citizens and distributed without charge to those along the parade route. From traditional Indian foods and sweets to more mainstream food offerings, parade-goers are treated to a wide range of tasty treats. Event day information, parade map, What is Vaisakhi?

Reading Challenge

Both students and staff have been hard at work reading this past month, and it’s been exciting to see all the books that were enjoyed. Way to go—keep up the great reading!

Sign up for the conference through Parent Connect will be made available on Wednesday, April 15th.

This is an opportunity for your child(ren) to show you what they have been learning and share their goals for the last term. We encourage everyone to set aside some time to celebrate the learning your child will be sharing with you.

Whitespot Grade 7 Fundraiser

Come on out and support our last Grade 7 Year End Fundraiser at White Spot!

The Whitespot Restaurant on Scott Road and 72nd is    generously supporting our Grade 7 Year End Event. On Wednesday, April 15 any food purchased throughout the day will have 15% donated to our school. Put “Heath Elementary Fundraiser” in the special notes box when you place a takeout order or inform your server when dining in-restaurant. Come on out and support our Grade 7s!

April 7-10

Happy Easter Heath Families. Wishing everyone a chance to spend time with family and friends over the long weekend.

Communicating Concerns

We believe that communication between the school and families is critical to your child’s success at school. If you have an issue, concern or question about some aspect of your child’s school experience, please reach out to your classroom teacher with a phone call, email or by making an appointment to meet with them. We recognize that sometimes these conversations might feel uncomfortable, but they are key to solving any issues or misunderstandings in a way that benefits everyone. If a matter remains unsolved, please contact the principal to request assistance in dealing with the matter. Ultimately, we want our school to be a community that supports children’s learning and nurtures the hearts of children and families, and we will do our best to work alongside you to do that. Click here for information on the district’s complaint resolution process.

Tsawwassen First Nation Treaty Day- April 3

Tsawwassen First Nation will celebrate the 17th anniversary of their Treaty on April 3rd, 2026. March 9-13

 Dear Heath Families,

Next Wednesday, the Grade 7 boys will compete in a friendly tournament at North Delta and play against two other teams. Our Grade 7 girls will be participating in a similar tournament in April.

As our season winds its way to a close, I would like to recognize the hard work of all the Grade 6 & 7 teams. Our athletes have worked hard to develop their skills and have shown much growth since their first practices. We were fortunate this year to have a few Seaquam and Burnsview students help us out as additional coaches and referees. Many thanks to our Heath coaches, Ms. Yip, Mr. Brown, Ms. Pahlad, Ms. Kaba, Mrs. Brugge, and Ms. Mann, Ms. Kim and Mr. Price for their tireless efforts in building the skill level of our teams, and for the many volunteer hours these coaches put in to ensure students had an exciting basketball season.

On Thursday after school, we had a great turnout at the District Science Fair and had 12 projects representing Heath. Well done Thunderbirds!

February 23-27

Dear Heath Families,

The Delta Police Department and City Bylaw Inspectors will be teaming up for the remainder of the school year to increase education and enforcement in all Delta school zones.

Throughout the past several months, officers have been actively monitoring these areas. However, we have consistently received a rise in complaints from concerned residents about:

Speeding vehicles
Parents stopping or parking illegally during drop-off and pick-up
Vehicles parked on crosswalks
Driveways being blocked

Motor Vehicle Act

Speeding in School Zone – fines range from $196-483 and possible vehicle impound.

Delta Highway Bylaws No. 6922, 2011

Sec 6.4(b) Stop, stand or park in front of or within 2 metres of driveway $75

Sec 6.4(d) Stop, stand or park within 5 metres of fire hydrant $75

Sec 6.4(m) Stop, stand or park contrary to traffic control device $50

We’re asking all parents and drivers to please slow down, follow posted signs, and show respect for the families and homeowners who are impacted by unsafe or inconsiderate driving.

‍♂️ Your cooperation helps keep our kids, school staff, and neighbourhoods safe. Thank you for doing your part.

Learning Updates

On Thursday, Feb. 19, formal learning updates for this term will be posted on Parent Connect.  This is an exciting time for children and parents, a time to offer encouragement and support as well as a time to set realistic goals.  As you sit down to discuss your child’s report card with them, keep in mind the following questions.

  • At what type of work does my child excel? All children have strengths and it is important to look at areas of excellence as well as areas requiring attention.  Celebrate your child’s successes.
  • What type of work is most challenging for my child? Areas of challenge provide children with opportunities to demonstrate perseverance, diligence, and determination, virtues that we want to foster in our children.
  • What is my child’s attitude towards learning? Attitude is a key ingredient to success.  While we need to help children be realistic about what they can achieve, everyone does better with a winning attitude.
  • How can I support my child in their learning? While a variety of homework activities may be assigned on any given night, use the report card to determine which subject area might require extra attention.  This will provide a focus for those evenings when your child says, “But I don’t have any homework.”  Regular practice with reading, or basic math facts will make a difference over time.
  • What goal(s) can we set together for the next term? Together, with your child, choose something to work on and then make a plan for how to achieve the goal.

Thank you for your positive partnership with us in helping your child to succeed at school.  If you have questions about how you can support your child in their learning, contact their classroom teacher.  Together we can make a difference.

February 9-13

Dear Heath Families,

I would like to kindly remind our school community that the PAC is made up entirely of dedicated parent volunteers who generously give their time and energy to support our students, staff, and school.

As with any volunteer‑run organization, we ask that all interactions with PAC members—whether by email, in person, or at meetings—be grounded in kindness, respect, and understanding. Our volunteers are here to help, and a positive, supportive environment allows them to continue contributing in meaningful ways.

Thank you for helping us maintain a welcoming and respectful community for everyone.

We had a fun presentation by some of the Vancouver Giants on Wednesday. All of our students have been given a passport to Be a Giant. There are four domains for students to work on. All students have two weeks to fill out their passport and then will receive a complimentary ticket to a Giants game. The date and more information will be coming soon.

Dogs on School Grounds

For many people, dogs are important members of the family, and we know that many enjoy walking to and from school with them. Please note, we do have some friendly reminders about dogs at school:

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times– our school ground are not an off-leash area on the fields, forest or around the blacktop areas.
  • Please be mindful that not everyone is comfortable with dogs. Some of our students and parents are fearful of dogs. If your dog can be overly excitable or feels threatened/anxious easily, please avoid busy times such as pick-up and drop-off times. Please also make sure you always have a good handle on your pet.
  • Please clean up after your dog! If you have forgotten/run out of dog poop bags, we have extras in the office. Please come ask!

February 2-6

Dear Heath Families,

We have many students arriving late to school daily. Our first bell rings at 8:55am which means students need to be lined up before that time.

The Importance of Regular School Attendance

Coming to school every day—and on time—helps your child learn and feel confident. Even small absences add up quickly:

  • Being 20 minutes late each day adds up to 12 full days of missed learning each year.
  • Missing just two days a month equals one full month of lost instruction by June.
  • Missing 15 days each year adds up to an entire year of learning lost by the end of Grade 12.

Students who attend regularly are more engaged, feel more connected to their school, and do better academically. Thank you for helping your child build strong attendance habits—every day counts!

Stay Home When Sick

The COVID/cold/flu season is hitting our school hard since being back from the holiday break. To keep our school as healthy as possible for students and staff, the best defence we have is for people to stay home when not well.  All staff and students should check themselves daily for signs and symptoms of illness that would limit their ability to participate fully in regular activities before coming to school to prevent spread of communicable diseases within the school settings. The school is not responsible to monitor students or staff for symptoms of illness.

Please remember to call the school and record an absence for each day your child will not be attending. Please remember to leave your child’s first and last name, the division and/or teacher and the reason for the absence.

January 26-30

Dear Heath Families,

We had another great week filled with music and reading. We were fortunate again this year to have a concert performed by the Seaquam Music Department.

Our Reading Day on Thursday was a huge success! We had new and previous Guest Readers join us this year ranging from children’s book authors, Delta Sheriffs, Fire Fighters, Delta Police and School Board Trustees.

Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. This year’s Family Literacy Day theme is Make Mealtime Family Learning Time. Preparing for mealtime is a fun (and tasty) way for families to learn together. Whether it’s following recipes, making shopping lists, or sharing stories at the dinner table, make your mealtime family learning time.

Community

Feelings First

Feelings First is a new provincial initiative focused on strengthening the social and emotional health of young children—recognizing that it’s just as important as physical health. A child’s ability to express emotions, manage stress, build friendships, and connect with the world through stories, conversations, and play all stem from these early foundations. As part of this initiative, free, self-paced e-learning modules have been launched for early years professionals, educators, parents, and caregivers. The modules explore social and emotional development from birth to age five and include short videos, real-world examples, practical strategies and insights from child health experts. For more information, visit https://www.feelingsfirst.ca/

Primary students will be able to pre-order their donuts with their teacher in the morning. All intermediate students will be able to purchase donuts when they are dismissed to go outside at lunch in the undercover area.

Road Safety Around Schools

We are urging all parents and drivers to please slow down and follow posted signs in school zones. To ensure the safety of all when traffic is busy, please use the designated areas when dropping off or picking up your child. Please also use extreme caution at the nearby crosswalks. Let’s keep students safe on their way to and from school. Delta Police School Liaison Officers and Delta Bylaw Inspectors will be working together over the coming months to increase enforcement and education at all Delta School zones.

December 15-19

Dear Heath Families,

We are looking forward to seeing our families at either concert on Tuesday. Please be mindful of our limited seating and auditorium capacity. We ask that only 2 family members attend either performance.

We would love everyone to bring a canned food item as your “ticket” to the show. We will be taking all donations to a local charity that supports people in need in our community.

We ask that your child(ren) be dropped off at the school for the evening performance no later than 5:30pm, wearing black pants/dress and your choice of White, Red, or Green Top, unless your classroom teacher has advised otherwise.

We will have all the lost and found items on display for the concerts. Please double check for any clothing, water bottles, umbrellas, shoes, etc.  that belong to your child(ren). All remaining items will be donated to charity.

Heath Spirit Days

During our last week of school before winter break, the Spirit Day committee has come up with a week of fun holiday themes:

Fall Cold/Flu Season

We are officially in the heart of cold/flu season. We would like everyone to enjoy their Winter Holidays and to stay healthy. To keep our school as healthy as possible for students and staff, the best defence we have is for people to stay home when not well and stay home until all symptoms have disappeared.

Please make sure to call the school and record an absence for each day your child will not be attending. The school’s number is (604) 596-1508 (available 24 hours a day) or email at heath.elem@deltaschools.ca.

Please remember to leave your child’s first and last name, the division and/or teacher and the reason for the absence.

Cozy Up With Reading

On Wednesday, Dec. 17 we will be hosting our first “Cozy Up With Reading” day. All staff and students are encouraged to wear their pyjamas for a day filled with fun reading activities. All students are asked to bring a copy of their favourite book, a stuffy and a flashlight in preparation for our day. We ask parents to please provide consent for the Personal Information Consent Form (PIC) on Parent Connect.

 Communications Survey Results

Prior to the summer break, we invited parents and caregivers to provide feedback regarding which communication channels from their child’s school and the school district worked best for them. We received almost 1,100 responses.

  • Email is the preferred communication channel for most families, for both urgent and non-urgent information from their child’s school and the district.
  • School/Principal’s newsletters are valued, especially for information on upcoming events and activities.
  • The school and district websites are not a main source of information for families.
  • Social media is not relied on as a communications channel.

December 8-10

Dear Heath Families,

Heath Spirit Days

During our last week of school before winter break, the Spirit Day committee has come up with a week of fun holiday themes:

Monday (Dec. 15) – Festive Socks or Accessories Day

Tuesday (Dec. 16) – Red and Green Day

Wednesday (Dec. 17) – Pyjama Day

Thursday (Dec. 18) – Snowball Day (wear blue/white/sparkles)

Friday (Dec. 19) – Festive Sweater Day

Whitespot Grade 7 Fundraiser

The Whitespot Restaurant on Scott Road and 72nd is generously supporting our Grade 7 Year End Event. On Wednesday, December 17 any food purchased throughout the day will have 15% donated to our school. Put “Heath Elementary Fundraiser” in the special notes box when you place a takeout order or inform your server when dining in-restaurant. Come on out and support our Grade 7s!

Dress for the Weather

We have needed to make a few phone calls home lately for students to get a change of clothing. Just a reminder to make sure your children come to school dressed appropriately for playing outside at recess and lunchtime (e.g. boots, jacket, hat, gloves, etc.), and please also pack an extra pair of socks and pants into their backpacks for really rainy days. Even for Intermediate students!

In the case of extremely poor weather, a decision will be made by staff to designate the recess and/or lunch hour as an “in day”, which means that students are to stay inside and play quietly in their classrooms rather than venture outdoors. We refrain from doing this unless absolutely necessary, as the children need the opportunity to get out in the fresh air and be physically active before heading back into the classroom (and besides, rain is just a fact of life of our West Coast climate).

Food Drive

The grade 6/7 classes are organizing a food drive and all classes will be collecting non-perishable food items as donations to our local food bank from Monday, December 1 until Wednesday, December 17. This year, the class that collects the most items will win an extra recess!

Please see the list below for the most needed items:

-Dried Herbs and Spices

-Cooking oils (Olive and Canola)

-Jars or Pouches of Baby Food

-Toilet paper

-Feminine Hygiene Products

-Canned Fruit and Vegetables

-Pasta with Pasta Sauce

-Beans and Lentils

-Tuna

-Canned Meat

-Peanut Butter

December 1-5

Dear Heath Families,

Heath Elementary is pleased to announce this year’s Winter Concert will take place on Tuesday, December 16th. There will be two performances taking place, one in the afternoon at 1:15pm and one in the evening at 6:00pm. Doors will open 30 minutes before the performances begin. Families are invited to attend both performances however, due to the limited capacity of our gymnasium, we ask that only 2-3 immediate family members attend either performance. Please have your child at the school by 5:30pm at the latest. We will be taking any non-perishable food items as entry tickets.

All our students, Mr. T and the rest of our amazing staff have worked very hard to make these performances special for our Heath families.  We ask that our guests attending either session to please stay and enjoy the entire performance as leaving part way through the event would be disruptive to other guests and disappointing to students.

Learning Updates

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the first, formal, written Learning Update (formerly known as Report cards) for the current school year will be available for viewing on Parent Connect.  This is an exciting time for children and parents, a time to offer encouragement and support as well as a time to review set goals made during the Learning Conferences.  After reading all the reports, I am pleased to see all the learning that has occurred and believe that all our students will continue to have a successful rest of the term. I am thankful for the positive partnership with us in helping your child to succeed at school.  If you have questions about how you can further support your child in their learning, contact their classroom teacher.  Together we can make a difference.

Parent Connect – Permission is Required for Every Student

We would love to share many of the photos we take of the students throughout the week. Please make sure to sign all the permission forms on Parent Connect. If we don’t have permission to share your child’s photo then we cannot have their picture in our slideshows, newsletters, etc. We have had some wonderful fruit and vegetables come to the school for our students to try. If your child does not have permission, then they are not able to participate. As well, often your child’s class goes outside to enjoy nature.  In order for your child to participate, the walking field trip permission needs to be given. Please let your child’s teacher or the office know if you have any questions. Below are instructions on how to grant permission for all the great things happening at Heath.

Even if you think you have already completed these steps, please log on and double-check

Please log onto Parent Connect:

https://www.deltasd.bc.ca/resources/parent-connect/

Use your email account (this is the easiest way to get in) and password (if you have forgotten your password click on “forgot my password” and your password will be emailed to you). You must allow for ‘Pop Ups’ on your computer. You can then access all your children at the school. You will need to do this for each of your children attending Heath.

Dear Heath Families,

Our 2025-2026 School Goal Plan is updated to give you an indication what is happening to enhance student learning at Heath. The School Plan has been uploaded to the school website under School Goal tab.

School Goals

Parent Parking

As we begin to get more rainy weather, more people are less likely to walk and our parking lot tends to get busier. There have been many families in need of reminding about how to use our Parking Lot safely.

In front of the dumpsters, chain link fence and the quick drop off area are NO PARKING ZONES. You are welcome to hold in the drop off area while you stay in your car for 5 minutes or less, but please don’t leave your vehicle as this is an easy flow lane. I appreciate your patience and cooperation in helping to follow road safety so that students and parents remain safe and traffic flows smoothly.

Please find below the Parking Lot Tutorial that are in three different languages, English, Punjabi and Pashto.

November 17-21

Dear Heath Families,

We had a very meaningful start to our week with the Remembrance Day Assembly. Our presenters, MCs, Tech Crew and teachers did an amazing job honouring the valour, courage and sacrifices of all the heroes who have served and continue to serve.

Lost and Found

Our Lost and Found is full of clothing items, shoes, water bottles, umbrellas and more. Students and parents will have until the last school day of December to claim lost and found clothing items. Clothing items not claimed by this time will be donated to charity.  Because December is a shortened school month due to Christmas Break, clothing items will remain in the lost and found area until, Friday, December 19th. We will have all items outside on display by the gym doors on Tuesday, December 16th during the Winter Concert.

$2 Donut Fundraiser

We will be having another $2 Krispy Kreme Donut fundraiser on Tuesday, November 18 to help offset the costs for our new outside mural. Primary students will be able to pre-order their donuts with their teacher in the morning. All intermediate students will be able to purchase donuts when they are dismissed to go outside at lunch in the undercover area.

November 10-14

Dear Heath Families,

It has been great seeing so many families over the last couple of weeks with the Learning Conferences and coming in for assistance with Parent Connect.

If you are having trouble updating your information or navigating your way around Parent Connect, please don’t hesitate to ask the office. We have many people available to assist with a variety of languages.

It was an exciting day at Heath as we sent Sukhmani S. off on her adventure as being “Fire Chief for the Day”. Sukhmani won her spot out all the students in the District. Congratulations Sukhmani!

Staff Change

It is with sadness that I report Ms. Devia, our Administration Assistant, will no longer be part of our Thunderbird staff as of Friday, November 14. Please join me in saying “Goodbye” and wishing her well this week. Ms. Akiyama will be joining our staff as our new Administration Assistant on Monday, November 17.

National Indigenous Veterans Day

National Indigenous Veterans Day is a memorial day observed in Canada in recognition of aboriginal contributions to military service, particularly in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. It occurs annually on November 8th. The day was first commemorated in 1994.

Remembrance Day

On Remembrance Day we honour those who sacrificed their lives so that we can live as we do today in Canada. By remembering, we pay tribute to all the men and women that served to defend our values and freedoms. We also honour those who continue to serve our country today.  On Monday, November 10th Heath will be holding a Remembrance Day Assembly in the gym. Some classes have signed up to present poems, songs, and a candlelight ceremony to help us all better understand and appreciate Remembrance Day and its significance. We will also have a wreath laying ceremony complete with two minutes of silence. Throughout the week, we will be accepting donations for the Poppy Campaign. Students who would like to donate can give the contribution to their teacher.

Donations can also be made online to The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund. https://www.legion.ca/donations

Extended Absences

Over the course of a school year, students may be absent for short periods of time for a variety of reasons. Extended absences, for reasons other than student health, should be carefully considered by families. To ensure that our students miss as little time as possible from school, we ask for parents’ cooperation in scheduling family holidays outside of school time.

Schools are not in a position to approve or deny permission for student absences for family holidays or other extended absences. This decision lies with the parent/guardian. Please do inform the office and teacher in advance of the absence so they are aware. Should parents wish to remove their child from school for a lengthy period of time, consideration should be given to the implication this may have to their child’s education. Important learning is missed by students during any absence which puts them at a disadvantage compared with those in regular attendance.

Should a family decide to remove their child for an extended absence, the school is not required to provide educational materials. Being present and engaged in the school setting goes beyond the materials provided. Teachers are not able to replicate the school experience by providing homework. Please note that teachers are not obliged to provide learning materials or assignments during an extended vacation absence. Should a student be absent for a significant period of time and therefore is not able to demonstrate the learning outcomes for a particular course, it may not be possible to provide an appropriate proficiency scale in reporting on their learning.

Dress for the Weather

As we are well into fall and approaching winter weather, it is cooler and can be very rainy. Just a reminder to make sure your children come to school dressed appropriately for playing outside at recess and lunchtime (e.g. boots, jacket, hat, gloves, etc.), and perhaps also pack an extra pair of socks and pants into their backpacks for really rainy days.

Musqueam Day and the Guerin decision

Every year, Musqueam acknowledges November 1 as Musqueam Day.

The day recognizes the landmark 1984 Supreme Court of Canada Guerin decision. The case was led by Musqueam’s then chief, Delbert Guerin, and fundamentally changed Canadian law by challenging the:

  • legal enforceability of the Crown’s obligations to Aboriginal people in Canada
  • fiduciary duty owed to Indigenous peoples in Canada
  • nature of Indigenous title in Canada
  • the Crown’s duty to consult with Indigenous peoples

Halloween

Heath will be having a student Halloween Parade on Friday, Oct. 31st at 9:30am. Students will walk through the gym to showcase their costumes along with our school-wide Thriller Dance. Each class will proceed to the gym, while remaining with their teacher. Students are encouraged to wear their costumes being mindful NOT to include replica weapons or anything too scary or gory. Please also remember that costumes are to be fun and respectful. Costumes that use traditional clothing, cultural symbols, or stereotypes can hurt people, even if unintentionally, and show disrespect to members of our community. Choosing costumes that don’t use or make fun of someone else’s culture demonstrates kindness, respect, and care for everyone in our school.

Parents and guardians are welcome to attend our festivities. Please enter the school through the gym doors by the undercover area nearest the Parent Parking Lot.

We look forward to seeing you there!

October 20-23

Dear Heath Families,

We are wishing all families a Happy Diwali! We hope this year’s Diwali illuminates your heart and homes with friendship and togetherness. We are encouraging everyone to dress for the celebration.

Home Conferences

Everyone has been working hard these last few weeks and I’m excited to see what our students are bringing home to share with you over the next couple of days. Our Home Conferences are set to take place on Monday through to Wednesday this week. Parents will receive work that your child has completed or will complete with you. Please give yourself approximately 30 minutes over the week to complete the activities and review all the hard work that was sent home. By going over the package sent home, it will help to create a better understanding of what your child is accomplishing at school, and it will be a preparation for rich discussion at the Learning conferences on November 5th and 6th.

Halloween at Heath

On Friday, October 31, all students that want to, are welcome to come to school dressed in their Halloween costume. We ask that costumes are fun and respectful. Costumes that use traditional clothing, cultural symbols, or stereotypes can hurt people, even if unintentionally, and show disrespect to members of our community. Choosing costumes that don’t use or make fun of someone else’s culture demonstrates kindness, respect, and care for everyone in our school. This expectation aligns with our code of conduct, and students whose costumes are harmful to others will, at the very least, be asked to change or remove them. We look forward to a creative, fun, and thoughtful Halloween.

To assist with this, here are a few guidelines for Halloween costumes at school:

  • should not be too scary
  • should be age appropriate
  • should not promote illegal activities or drugs/alcohol
  • must be safe & comfortable.  Students must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see and hear.  Anything that limits vision or restricts movement can lead to falling & other injuries. That’s no fun on Halloween! (students may wear masks during the parade, though)
  • must be in line with our dress guidelines (students are sufficiently covered and dressed for the weather)
  • toy weapons should be kept at home
  • not all students like to dress up (and that’s ok, too!)
  • since costumes worn to school may not survive the day intact, consider a spare/alternate costume and save the “real” one for trick or treating that night

October 13-17

Dear Heath Families,

Thanksgiving

Canadian Thanksgiving will be held on Monday, October 13th. Thanksgiving is a time for celebrating all the blessings of the past year and giving thanks to those who have helped us along the way.=

“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.”—William Arthur Ward

On behalf of the staff at Heath Elementary, we wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving! We hope this weekend finds you with moments of gratitude and togetherness with family and friends. We all have so much to be thankful for.

Student Photo Day

Will take place on Wednesday, October 15th.  Here is some information from our photographer to help make sure the experience is successful for everyone.

  • Choose solid, muted colors for clothing
  • Avoid busy patterns, logos, and text
  • Smile naturally
  • Be relaxed and have fun
  • Follow instructions

Parking at Heath

Typically, with the wet weather comes a need for a reminder about accessing our parking lot safely. It is very important, especially when visibility is low due to rain, that families adhere to the parking expectations.

In front of the dumpsters and the quick drop off area are NO PARKING ZONES. You are welcome to hold in the drop off area while you stay in your car for 5 minutes or less, but please don’t leave your vehicle as this is an easy flow lane. Only exit or enter vehicles when they are parked, and not in the middle of the parking lane. I appreciate your patience and cooperation in helping to follow road safety so that students and parents remain safe and traffic flows smoothly.

You can also watch the Parking Lot Tutorial Mr. T created in three different languages.

Emergency Preparedness – Great British Columbia ShakeOut

On Thursday, October 16 at 10:17a.m., students and staff across the district will practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during the Great British Columbia ShakeOut Earthquake drill. B.C. is the most seismically active area of Canada, and experiences thousands of minor earthquakes each year. The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is an annual opportunity for individuals, communities, schools and organizations to practice essential earthquake safety measures.  Beyond the drill, everyone is encouraged to review and update their emergency preparedness plans and supplies.

Reminder: This year, the district has continued to collect the annual Emergency Preparedness Fee of $10 per student. This is to cover the maintenance and replenishment of emergency provisions, including food, water and first aid items, to help care for students in case of a large-scale incident such as an earthquake. If you haven’t paid the $10 fee already, please send cash to the school office. If your family requires financial support in relation to this fee, please contact the school office. Discretion will be maintained.

Did you know? In the Spring of 2024 B.C. began operations of an Earthquake Early Warning system. This system provides up to tens-of-seconds of warning by detecting an earthquake immediately as it occurs; they do not predict earthquakes. These public alerts are sent though the national alerting system to cell phones, so there is no need to sign up to receive them. Criteria for alerts are based on the intensity of the shaking and the recipient’s distance from the earthquake epicentre.  Earthquakes generating only low levels of shaking will not produce an alert. Additionally, sites very close to an earthquake’s epicentre may be in the event’s “late alert zone”, within which alerts may arrive after the shaking. In general, if an alert is received it is best to assume the shaking is imminent and take immediate protective actions of DROP, COVER & HOLD. For more information, please visit: https://www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/eew-asp/system-en.php#response

September 29- Oct. 3

Dear Heath Families,

Our new outside mural looks fantastic and has been well received by so many in our community. We are very fortunate that the beautiful weather has allowed Jason Craft to finish his design earlier than anticipated.

Truth and Reconciliation Walk and Ceremony

On Monday, September 29, as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting Indigenous Reconciliation, the district will host its second annual Walk for Truth and Reconciliation rain or shine. Students and staff across the district will participate in a walk to honour the legacy of Residential school survivors and raise awareness about the importance of Reconciliation in Canada.

Please make sure you sign the Walking Field Trip Permission Form on Parent Connect so that your child(ren) don’t miss out on this honourable experience.

Please also encourage your child to wear orange to school on Monday, September 29th.

$2 Krispy Kreme Fundraiser

We will be having our first $2 Krispy Kreme Donut fundraiser on Wednesday, October 1st. Primary students will be able to pre-order their donuts with their teacher in the morning. All intermediate students will be able to purchase donuts when they are dismissed to go outside at lunch in the undercover area.

Stay Home When Sick

The COVID/cold/flu season has begun now that we are all together. To keep our school as healthy as possible for students and staff, the best defence we have is for people to stay home when not well.  All staff and students should check themselves daily for signs and symptoms of illness that would limit their ability to participate fully in regular activities before coming to school to prevent the spread of communicable diseases within the school settings. The school is not responsible to monitor students for symptoms of illness.

Please remember to call the school and record an absence for each day your child will not be attending. Please remember to leave your child’s first and last name, the division and/or teacher and the reason for the absence.

World Teachers’ Day October 5

World Teachers’ Day is held annually on October 5th to celebrate all teachers around the globe. The theme for 2025 is, “Making Lives Better!”. Please join us as we highlight the vital contributions of our teachers and the immense value they bring to Heath in saying a huge, “Thank You!”

September 22-26

Dear Heath Families,

We are so pleased with the turn out on Thursday at our Welcome Back Open House.  Thank you to all families that came, it was wonderful seeing parents with their children at the school to start the year off well. We appreciate everyone that supported our PAC at the BBQ. We are grateful the Lions Club came out to support our school. It looked like a great success! We are looking forward to upcoming similar activities in the school.

Truth and Reconciliation Walk and Ceremony

On Monday, September 29, as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting Indigenous Reconciliation, the district will host its second annual Walk for Truth and Reconciliation. Students and staff across the district will participate in a walk to honour the legacy of Residential school survivors and raise awareness about the importance of Reconciliation in Canada. Each school is organizing its own walk. Following the walk, a ceremony will take place in the theatre at North Delta Secondary School, which will be live streamed to all school and district sites. Please encourage your child to wear orange to school on Monday, September 29th.

Tuesday, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. If you’re wondering what you can do to recognize and honour the day, here are a few simple steps towards Reconciliation:

Outside Mural

Jason Craft has begun his work at designing our new outdoor mural. We ask that you please avoid the area to prevent any accidents or damages. Please stay back from the retaining blocks at the front of the school.

Walk Your Wheels On The Playground

For the safety of everyone, please remind your children they must walk their bikes, scooters, skateboards etc. when on the school grounds.

Electric Scooters

Despite their popularity in our province, electric kick scooters remain illegal for use on public roads, bike lanes and sidewalks across most of B.C., except in a handful of cities that are taking part in a pilot program to test the use of them. The City of Delta is not part of the pilot program. Even in the pilot program cities, it is illegal for a person under 16 years of age to operate an electric kick scooter. You can view the provincial rules here: Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project Regulation.

While we don’t have any Heath students currently using scooters, some siblings have been seen on the school grounds using them and we felt it was important to share this information with you. We thank you for your attention to this matter.

Dress for the Weather

We are approaching the time of year when it is cooler and can be very rainy. Just a reminder to make sure your children come to school dressed appropriately for playing outside at recess and lunchtime (e.g. boots, jacket, hat, gloves, etc.), and perhaps also pack an extra pair of socks and pants into their backpacks for really rainy days!

September 15-18

Dear Heath Families,

We had a terrific first full week of school with an assembly to introduce new staff members and to commemorate Terry Fox. Our students did a great job as respectful audience members as well as participating in our run on Friday morning! Our new, non-slip, gym floors were ready just in time!

New Thunderbird Staff

While many of our staff are returning from last year, there are a number of new faces joining the “Thunderbird” team. Please join me in extending a welcome to the following new staff members:

  • A. Chandola (Kindergarten Teacher will job-share with Ms. Kaba)
  • Z. Krug (Learning Support Teacher)
  • K. Leshuck (Teacher Librarian on Fridays)
  • J. Rodriguez (Child Youth Care Worker, CYCW)

Helpful Suggestions for a Successful School Year

Here are some suggestions that will be helpful in establishing school routines and will make this year the most successful one yet for your child!

Read Together – Children who read at home with their parents are more successful in school. Show your children that you view reading as an important activity by keeping lots of reading material around the house and set aside time each evening for reading. Also, model reading yourself.

Establish A Daily Family Routine – Set a specific quiet time and place every day for homework or general reading. While you should be actively involved in your child’s homework routine, let them do the actual work. Other helpful routines involve assigning responsibilities for household chores, being firm about times to get up and go to bed (most children require about 10 hours of sleep per night) and have dinner together whenever possible. Don’t forget about the importance of a healthy breakfast and lunch to ensure your child has the energy needed to make it through the day productively.

Talk Together – Find some time each day to ask your child about school. Ask specific questions that will require explanations. Not only will this provide you with an overview of what your child is learning each day but explaining their learning to you will heighten their understanding of their lessons.

Home-School Relationship – The importance of a strong home-school relationship cannot be overstated. Get to know your child’s teacher(s) and what they expect. Let them know you will reinforce the importance of schoolwork at home and keep them informed of important things happening in your family that may be affecting your child at school. Make sure your child knows that you are interested in their school. This will send the message that what they are doing is important.

Have High, But Realistic Goals – Make sure you set goals with your child that are achievable, but not too easy for their age, maturity, and ability. Don’t forget to celebrate when these goals are achieved.

Emergency Preparedness Fee:

Last year, the school district introduced an annual $10 Emergency Preparedness Fee per student to help ensure every school is equipped with essential emergency supplies – such as food, water, and first aid items – in the event of a major incident like an earthquake.  This annual fee, due at the beginning of each school year, plays a vital role in helping us meet that goal and allows us to replace supplies as they expire.

Please pay this fee by sending cash or a cheque to the school office. If your family requires financial support in relation to this fee, please contact the school office. Discretion will be maintained.

The district will also accept donations for the Emergency Preparedness fund, so if you would like to give more than the suggested amount of $10 per student, it would be much appreciated. Please note: Donations of $25 or more will receive a taxable donation receipt.

Welcome Back Open House

Heath will be hosting a Welcome Back open house for the school community this Thursday from 5:00 – 6:00pm. Please enter through the front door and proceed to your child’s classroom. Intermediate families will spend a portion of the time in the classroom and then be a part of a presentation in the Library.

Bugle or Bagpipes

Are there any Heath family members able to play either the bugle or bagpipes? If so, would they be willing to come play at our Remembrance Day Assembly on Monday, November 10th? Anyone interested, please contact the office.

September 8-12

 Dear Heath Families,

Our first week back to school was a success! We welcomed many new students to our school community. A huge, “Thank You!” to our PAC that was outside providing coffee and information to our new and returning families. At the end of the week, we were able to place our students into their permanent classes and prepare us for our first full week ahead.

Heath Library

Heath Library is a safe and inclusive place for children to explore the joy of reading. To begin the school year, we will learn about how to listen and be respectful in Library using Second Step ~ a social emotional learning resource. Children will learn skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, and problem solving. I look forward to the 2025/2026 school year. If you would like to volunteer in the library, please sign up at the office or email Ms. Smith at  lssmith@deltaschools.ca

Reading Together

As we shift our School Goal to Literacy, think about starting the school year off with reading with your child(ren) often and early as it will support them to thrive in school.

The benefits of reading together go far beyond learning to read.

Reading to young children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language. It also helps them learn general information about the world, which makes it easier for them to learn about new subjects once they get to school.

Books also help children build empathy and learn how to handle challenging feelings. Parents can use reading time as a chance to talk about emotions and how to cope with them. For example, you might say: “Have you ever felt as angry as the girl in this book? What would you do if you did?”

https://childmind.org/article/why-is-it-important-to-read-to-your-child/

Student Planners:

Student planners will be distributed to students in grades 1-6, at a cost of $8.00 each.  Please have your child bring their payment to their classroom teacher so that they may get their planners as soon as possible.

Tardiness/attendance

As we start the school year, we want to reinforce all of the good habits that help build success at school.  Being present, on time and ready to learn are key elements for learning.  Please work with your child to ensure they arrive at school with time to settle and be ready to start as the school day begins.  Arriving late can cause stress while also disrupting the day for both your child and other students.  Thank you for your support!

Road Safety

Pick up times can be busy and we have limited parking around the school. Due to this, we encourage families to walk to and from school if possible. To help us continue to keep our students and staff safe during pick up and drop off time, parents can do the following:

  • Keep our staff parking lot and front of the school clear of parent vehicles.
  • Park only in the designated spots.
  • The quick drop off/pick-up area is not for parking, please do not leave your vehicle
  • Make sure your children are walking on designated walking paths while near the staff parking lot and not cutting through
  • Follow all road signs to ensure you are parked safely and legally

Please take a moment to watch the parking lot tutorial in three different languages our creative and amazing Mr. T created.

Walk Your Wheels On The Playground

For the safety of everyone, please remind your children they must walk their bikes, scooters, skateboards etc. when on the school grounds.

Restricting cellphone usage in schools

Please be reminded that restrictions on the use of cellphones and other personal digital devices came into effect on July 1, 2024. The district emailed families regarding these changes on June 20. You can read the letter here: https://district.public.deltasd.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/06/DS-Letter-home-Personal-Digital-Devices-June-20-2024.pdf

If you have any questions, please contact the school.

Stay Home When Sick

Now that we are all together again, the chances of spreading cold and flu are higher. To keep our school as healthy as possible for students and staff, the best defence we have is for people to stay home when not well.  All staff and students should check themselves for signs and symptoms of illness each day prior to arriving at school. Please remember to call the school and record an absence for each day your child will not be attending. Please remember to leave your child’s first and last name, the division and/or teacher and the reason for the absence.

School-Wide Medical Alert

Several of our students have life-threatening allergies to eggs, peanuts, nuts (cashews, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, Brazil nuts, pecans, macadamias), and sesame seeds. Exposure to even tiny amounts of nut particles – residue on a desk, a book, a door handle, a computer keyboard, or a drinking fountain – may be enough to trigger a reaction. Please help us create a safe environment for them by keeping foods containing eggs, nuts, peanuts, and sesame seeds at home. Several companies are now making nut-free snacks and we encourage you to look for these new products when shopping. Other names for peanuts and other nuts include: arachide, arachis oil, beer nuts, goober nuts, goober peas, ground nuts, kernels, mandelonas, nut meals, valencias, anacardium nuts, calisson, marzipan, pinion, Queensland nut (macadamia). Label reading is the key to sending safe, egg-free and nut-free foods to school. Please do your part to ensure our school environment is a safe one for all our students. THANK YOU!!

Administration of Medication

Schools are required to maintain a safe procedure for dispensing medications. We would like to have information regarding medication administration within the first two weeks of school. If your child is required to take medication at school, please request a Request for Administration of Medication at School form from the office. These forms must be completed each year and are required to be signed by your physician.

Welcome Back Open House

Heath will be hosting a Welcome Back open house for the school community Thursday, September 18 from 5:00 – 6:00pm. Please enter through the front door and proceed to your child’s classroom. Intermediate families will spend a portion of the time in the classroom and then be a part of a presentation in the Library. We will have our multicultural worker, Ms. Dhaliwal, at the school to assist with any families in need.

Parent Connect – Permission is Required for Every Student- EVERY YEAR

Even if you think you have already completed these steps, please log on and double-check

Please log onto Parent Connect:

https://www.deltasd.bc.ca/resources/parent-connect/

As we have in years past, we will continue to use Parent Connect.  For those of you who are not familiar with Parent Connect, it is an internet accessible program where you, as a parent or guardian, can access and/or update demographic information pertaining to your child.  By logging onto Parent Connect, parents have the ability to update their personal contact information, view their child’s attendance records and their report card history.  Instructions on accessing and navigating Parent Connect can be found on our school website under the Parent Community tab and at this link:

Parent Connect Information

Use your email account (this is the easiest way to get in) and password (if you have forgotten your password click on “forgot my password” and your password will be emailed to you). You must allow for ‘Pop Ups’ on your computer. You can then access all your children at the school. You will need to do this for each of your children attending Heath.

Please make sure all family demographics are up to date so that in the case of an emergency, the school can be in contact.  Any changes can be made by calling or bringing new information to the school office.

To add Emergency Release information, click on the light blue button “Emergency/Out of Prov/Other Contacts.”

Click on the “Select” button on the left side of the screen and add contact on the right side of the screen. Add no more than 3 names using type ER-Emergency Release and add 1 name using type OP-Out Of Province Contact.

Once you have completed your changes/additions to your child’s Emergency Release information click on the “Bulletin” tab on the screen and give your consent/permission to ALL of the following:

  • Demographic Information up-to-date
  • Emergency Release Information up-to-date
  • Mac Computer Permission form
  • Photographs/Video/Website Consent (in addition to returning the signed consent form)
  • GAFE Permission – (Google Apps for Education)
  • Fruit and Vegetable Consent form
  • Walking Field Trip
  • Outside Media Consent form

These show on two screens, once you have SAVED the first three the other one will show. Repeat for all children attending Heath.

When you log on to Parent Connect, please read the rules about outside media in schools. If you do NOT want your child involved with outside media activities, please print off the form to fill out.

Please take a few minutes to complete all these important forms as soon as possible. If you are having difficulty, please join us at the Open House for assistance. Make sure to check the accuracy of the email address you have given to the office as this will help with the process.

Financial Hardship

The District is committed to ensuring that no student of school age will be denied an educational program due to financial hardship and that charges will not be a barrier to student participation in school activities. At this time, we are requesting that families reach out to Mrs. Reeve, kreeve@deltaschools.ca, if you are in need of assistance with school supplies, fees or other school-related costs.  As always, all requests will be treated with dignity and your privacy will be respected. We want to work with our families to ensure that our students, your children, have everything they need in order to be successful at school. Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can help.

Field Trips

If costs are prohibitive to your child’s participation, please reach out to the school principal for support.  As always, all requests will be treated with dignity and your privacy will be respected.

Terry Fox

The annual Terry Fox run will be held this Friday September 12th @ 11:30 a.m.  As we have done in years past, we are encouraging students to bring in a “Toonie for Terry”.  If giving is feasible, we would like to continue to support cancer research and add to the legacy of Terry Fox. As done last year, students that contribute will receive a ticket for a draw to win a Terry Fox T-Shirt.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, and our school has joined nearly 10,000 schools nationwide in celebrating his legacy. Heath Elementary’s fundraising goal is $500. Please consider donating a ‘Toonie for Terry’.

Here is a special video message from Fred Fox to welcome and inspire you to this year’s special event.

Week of June 23

Dear Heath Families,

As this school year enters its final days, I would like to express how incredibly proud we are of the hard work displayed by both our students and staff.

It is hard to believe the end of the school year is nearly upon us! As we look forward to the summer holidays, we would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to all of you for the support you have shown over the past year.  We have shared many great experiences, and we recognize what a wonderful community we work in and are grateful to be Thunderbirds!

On behalf of the entire staff, I would also like to say a huge thank you to our parent community for the Staff Appreciation Luncheon on Tuesday and the PAC Pizza lunch on Wednesday.  The food was delicious, and everyone is grateful for the recognition.  Thank you!

We would like to extend a special congratulations to our Grade 7 students as they finish elementary school.  To all our Grade 7s, we would like to say thank you for the leadership you have provided to our school over the past year, and we wish you all the best in high school!

For those families leaving us at the end of this month, we wish you well in your new school communities and know that you will continue to achieve great things in the years ahead.

As wonderful as summer is, it can set some kids back in their learning. We encourage all our students to keep reading. It can be newspapers, comics, novels, or even menus in restaurants. The key is to keep practising. The same thing can be said for math. Have younger kids identify numbers around them like the price of gas, items on your grocery list or amount of tax on a local restaurant bill. Math doesn’t have to be from a book to be meaningful.

On behalf of the staff at Heath Elementary we would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and fun summer vacation.  I would also like to wish a successful back to school in the fall. I know I will miss seeing all the Thunderbird faces!

Staff Changes

As you may already be aware, we will be saying goodbye to several staff members at the end of the school year. We would like to recognize the following staff who are leaving Heath Elementary at the end of the school year:

  • Ms. Savery (Learning Support Teacher)
  • Ms. Yeung (Learning Support Teacher)
  • Ms. Rabbani (Teacher Librarian)
  • Ms. Koh (Education Assistant)
  • Ms. Rattan (ELL Education Assistant)
  • Ms. Stevenson (Child Youth Care Worker)

We would like to thank all these staff members for the huge contribution they have made to our learning community and wish them the best in their new assignments!

Term 3 Learning Updates (Report Cards)

Will be available on Parent Connect on Thursday, June 26.  An email will be sent to families once the reports become available for viewing.

Emergency Preparedness Fee

Last year, the school district introduced an annual $10 Emergency Preparedness Fee to help ensure every school is equipped with essential emergency supplies – such as food, water, and first aid items – in the event of a major incident like an earthquake (see letter from May 2024). As of mid-June, we have collected more than $125,000, which is already being used to ensure each school is stocked with emergency food and water reserves.

Our ultimate goal is to maintain at least a three-day supply of food and water for every student. This annual fee, due at the beginning of each school year, plays a vital role in helping us meet that goal and allows us to replace supplies as they expire. In September, you’ll receive more details on how to pay this fee for the 2025/2026 school year. If your family requires financial support in relation to this fee, please contact the school office. Discretion will be maintained.
